July 2025: WHAT WE’RE SEEING
We are in two historic change trends now. Changes and uncertainty in funding of capital projects, social services, education, government agencies, and more are leading to layoffs and delayed hiring. Government policies impact multinational manufacturing and those companies who supply them, and those companies have slowed down their hiring until business conditions and demand are more predictable.
With these layoffs, large numbers of people with similar skills and knowledge flood a local market. It takes longer for the community to reabsorb them than if there were just a few. Moving and changing fields may help shorten the time it takes to land a new job.
Yet, the second historic change is as disruptive, or even more and policy changes. AI is making some jobs redundant and increasing productivity of others. Employers don’t know if they can keep new hires for more than a year with these developing technologies and so are reluctant to hire. Plus, a few candidates use AI to falsely promote themselves and their accomplishments. Hiring processes are much longer and more complex with more testing than just a year ago.
If you are employed, you may want to increase your networking to be ready to take a new job, to learn how your field is changing, and to learn about possible new fields that you’re interested in, or get ideas to upgrade your skills.
Be very accurate in your representations of yourself. Create a portfolio of projects and accomplishments even if you are not a creative. Ask for references from more people you’ve interacted with than you think necessary.
Education professionals may find the hiring season has shifted to August this year. Keep talking with people who share your interests.
